Despite their differences, these residents share the common goal to unite in peace and prosperity. The quintessential symbol of their shared values is the European Union flag, which contains the flags of every member state.

The European Union flag was designed in 1957 by the French artist Gérard Encausse. The flag was created for the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), a precursor of the European Union. Encausse based the flag on the flags of Belgium, France, Italy, and Luxembourg.
